How about paper plates
Napkins – I have collected cloth napkins to have enough for a dinner party. They may not match, but I know we will be washing clothes/towels the next day. Just toss them in with the rest.
Plastic utensils
Stop using paper towels to dry dishes or your hands.
How about diapers? For sure they are convenient, however disposable diapers are one of the worst things you can put into a landfill,
Bottled water. I’ve calculated my husband and I spend $548.00 a year on bottled water. He insists he can drink better and the water also taste better from a bottle. My refrigerator has a water filter in the door. At 24 bottles in a case x 3 a week x 52 weeks = 3744 bottles we are contributing to the landfills. (I may show this to hubs and see if I can get my point across!!) Staggering when I look at in writing.
Then there is the Ziploc or glad bags. I usually have two boxes in the island drawer for my convenience. Instead let’s try using plastic re-usable containers.
Grocery bags – the plastic kind. There are cloth-reusable bags on the market now, the size of the plastic grocery bag, and yet we continue to use the grocer’s bags without thinking.
Here is a new one. Hasn’t been on the market long, in fact I just got one. The Swiffer!! Oh yes you talk about convenient, just place one of the disposable cloths on the Swiffer and then throw it away when the job is done. Have you noticed the price of the replacement cloths?
AA batteries. Here is one I must start doing. For a few cents more than what I pay for several packs of AA batteries, (which every remote in my house uses) I could get rechargeable batteries. What can one do with dead batteries but to throw them in the trash?

It helps with weight loss--I have read that keeping the body in an alkaline state helps people lose weight faster. Lemons are high in fiber pectin, which helps keep one full, longer. They also have a diuretic effect, which helps with water weight gain.

It helps control the coffee habit--I will drink coffee sometimes, but only if I have had my entire glass of lemon water. Many days I feel like the lemon water wakes me up more than coffee does...

Anything to save a dollar! I am trying this, no question about it!

To package, use a clean glass jar. Avoid plastic, as plastic containers have been found to contain the toxin Bisphenol-A, which can leach into food and cosmetic items. Make a label that lists the ingredients, and note that it is perishable and should be used within three months or stored in the refrigerator.

Handmade Body Moisturizer Recipe

Like fresh food, this will go bad after a certain period of time. If you don’t think you’ll use it within three months, store it in the refrigerator. Makes approximately 2 cups
1 cup filtered water, cold brewed tea, orange blossom water, or rose water
¾ cup oil such as olive, almond, unrefined coconut, or avocado
3 tablespoons grated beeswax

Optional: a few drops of essential oil of your choice, for fragrance
1. Set up a blender and pour in the water. Prepare clean, dry glass jars for packaging and have them nearby.
2. Put the oil and the beeswax in a Pyrex measuring cup. Place the cup in a pan or small pot and pour in water to reach about halfway up the cup. Bring the water to a gentle boil, and heat the oil and beeswax until the beeswax melts. You’ll know when the wax is melted because you won’t see it anymore. As soon as the wax is melted, remove the cup from the water and let the oil cool for 2 minutes.
3. Turn on the blender and start blending the water at medium speed. Remove the stopper in the blender lid so you can pour the oil through the top while blending. Slowly pour in the oil and the mixture will begin to emulsify. If there is still some water on the surface, turn up the blender and blend the mixture 30 seconds to a minute longer. If you’re using essential oil, blend it in now.
4. With a clean rubber spatula, transfer the cream to the glass jars. Cover the jars with cheesecloth for an hour, or until they’ve reached room temperature. Placing the lid on the jar when this is warm will cause condensation to form under the lid, which will water down the lotion and form bacteria. When the lotion is cool, screw on the jar lids. Store at room temperature for up to 3 months, or in the refrigerator for 6 months.

If you want to add rose water to this here a quick way to make it:

Recipe for Rose Water Tonic
1 cup fresh rose petals
1 cup distilled water
Place fresh petals in a bowl. Bring water to a boil and pour over rose petals. Let steep for 30 minutes. Strain petals from liquid and store in a glass bottle in the refrigerator.
PS: Since certain roses are chemically treated to enhance color and prolong their longevity, make sure the petals you use are entirely chemical-free.
(Quick Version)
5-7 drops of Rose oil Therapeutic-Grade Essential Oil
1 cup of distilled water
Add drops to the water and place it on a glass container (preferably spray bottle) and shake well every time you want to use it!
Beneficial for the skin
Rose Water is very beneficial for the skin and is used in various kinds of creams and face masks. It helps in the purification and cleansing of normal skin. Applying rose water on oily skin balances the oil contents and tones the skin. Sensitive skin is cooled and soothed by the application of rose water. It helps in healing wounds and sunburns caused on all skin types. It can also be applied as an aftershave to soothe burning and irritated skin.
Relaxation form stress and fatigue
Addition of rose water to bathing water relieves fatigue, produces a relaxing effect, and improves mood in conditions of stress and depression.
Healing properties
Rose water also has healing properties and is suitable for rinsing in conditions of sore throat. A cotton ball soaked in rose water can also be used for treating inflamed glands.
Benefits to the eyes
Rose water can be used as a compress on the eyes for soothing effect in tired and fatigued eyes. People sitting in front of computers should make regular use of rose water as an eye compress. Simply soak two cotton rounds with rose water and apply to each eye for at least 10 minutes.

So I have drastically switched my career field and decided to become a teacher. It was something that has been in the back of my mind since mid-secondary school (about 15/16) but I just completely ignored it not mention the paycheck.......... sheeesh. But after my kids it has become the most driving force in my life. It seems to the only thing I can ever think about every where I turn says you have to be a teacher. So I took the necessary steps and now I am pursuing a degree in education.

Have you ever had any teacher that has been influential to you? Here (in Trinidad) it's a myth created by American culture, the caring considerate teacher, maybe Santa does exist!

The "Vac from the sea" is part of Electrolux's "quest to improve its (and the world's) plastic karma" by using gathered plastic debris from the world's oceans to build unique vacuum cleaners.

In terms of sustainability, the windows and doors were strategically positioned in order to capture breezes and cool the home without using electricity. A little water and baking soda makes a terrific cleaning paste for tubs, sinks, stoves, and other surfaces. Its whitening effect is great for cleaning grout. PaperBark Camp is somewhere I would like to see but Australia is so far away. So since the first time I realised that Jeffery Campbell existed I have wanted to own one pair of his shoes, no luck yet. But still, I wait with no relief, (wink, wink money) in sight, so I wait. In my waiting it seems as if the good people at Jeffery Campbell have realised how much I yearn for a pair of any type of their shoes so they have designed the El Carmen and the San Diego as if the Lita was not bad enough, to make my waiting worse and even more painful. In the past I worte to them hoping to appeal to anyone there who has a soft side but that failed miserably. I got one response out of maybe a dozen letters/e-mails. But, still I will watch ~~and cry (sometimes) in sercet and~~ wait one day I'll get a pair, one day. Pink Kitten you are one hell of a fortunate lady.

I have two girls and during both my pregnancies my hair refused to grow at least that's what it seemed liked. But of african descent and having locks I am used to seeing it grow fairly quickly. I was so confused but as the delivery of each baby my started making up for the nine months of not growing not even an inch.
I thought this was one crazy situation of pregnancy taking its toll on me in a totally different way than everyone else but appararently it happens to other women out there. Does anyone else get strecht marks on thier ankles? I know its gross but just wondering.

Hair Loss After Pregnancy: Advice and Information

If you are pregnant or have just given birth, hair loss after pregnancy is a concern to many women. However, like most changes during pregnancy, it is a temporary problem you will face. And there is no need to worry that you are a lone ranger because 40% to 50% of pregnant women face hair loss problems.

Hair loss connected to pregnancy usually occurs after delivery and is most common three months after. The reason for this is because during pregnancy the rise in hormones keeps you from losing your hair. But after delivery, the hormones return to normal levels allowing the hair to fall out and return to the normal cycle.

Every three to four months, it is normal for hair in a resting phase to fall out allowing new hair to grow in. During pregnancy, there is a delay in the resting phase. Once the hormones return to normal levels, the hair loss delayed because of pregnancy all fall out at once. Although your hair loss will return to normal levels after about 6 to 12 months, there are things you can do to prevent hair loss after pregnancy.

There are many things that can trigger hair loss, including any kinds of changes in your body according to the estrogen hormone balance. One of the first things you want to do is consult your health care provider or doctor. This will allow you to ensure a proper balance of hormones and ask for advice and any kinds of prescriptions they can provide you with.

Next, the kinds of hairstyles you normally would wear may need to be avoided. Although it may be a pain, avoiding pigtails, cornrows, hair weaves, and braids could save you from losing a lot of hair. The reason having these hairstyles can promote hair loss is because this can pull your hair and put stress on it.

When washing your hair, it is vital that you use shampoos and conditioners that contain biotin and silica. As your hair becomes wet, be as gentle as possible during your shower and after. This is because hair is fragile when it is wet, so try to avoid fine tooth combs and being rough with it while blow drying your hair. And if you absolutely have to use a blow dryer, use it on a cool setting.

While it is important to take care of your hair, taking care of your health can be just as important. Eating a healthy diet that is high in fruits and vegetables containing antioxidants can be great for your hair. This will help provide protection for your hair follicles and promote hair growth. Some of the supplements you should include in your diet include Vitamin B complex, Biotin, Vitamin C and Zinc.

For some, preventing hair loss after pregnancy completely is just not possible. But you can reduce the amount lost after pregnancy by applying some or all of the methods listed above.

Rainwater tanks are installed to make use of rain water for later use, reduce mains water use for economic or environmental reasons, and aid self-sufficiency. Stored water may be used for watering gardens, agriculture, flushing toilets, in washing machines, washing cars, and also for drinking, especially when other water supplies are unavailable, expensive, or of poor quality, and that adequate care is taken that the water is not contaminated or the water is adequately filtered.

While you can spend more for a large commercially produced system, setting up a basic rain barrel system is the kind of project you can complete in an afternoon for less than $100. Since even a light rain can produce several hundred gallons of rooftop runoff, you'll have little trouble filling your barrel. An inch of rain on a 1,000 square-foot roof will put over 600 gallons into a gutter system — much more than most people collect.

The World Health Organization (WHO) and the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) emphasize the value of breastfeeding for mothers as well as children. Both recommend exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months of life and then supplemented breastfeeding for at least one year and up to two years or more. While recognizing the superiority of breastfeeding, regulating authorities also work to minimize the risks of artificial feeding.

Food Garnishing:Orange peels are quite commonly used in a lot of foods like cakes, marmalades, cookies, salads and even rice. You can simply grate some orange peels or cut them into thin, long slivers and add the same orange zest to a variety of foods. However, while doing so, avoid the white portion of the peel (also known as pith), as this may give a bitter taste to your dishes and at the same time add aesthetic inferiority to the otherwise colorful skin.

Insect Repellent:The orange peels are loaded with essential oils, which can be used to our advantage in a lot many ways. They act as natural insect repellent and hence, keep mosquitoes, gnats and other insects away. You can also blend a mixture of orange peels and water on ant hills, in order to keep pests away.

Animal Deterrent:In quite a similar way, using orange peel also helps you keep animals away. Animals, like cats, do not like the smell of citrus fruits. Hence, simply wipe some orange peels on the leaves of your indoor plants or on the slabs of your kitchen. This not only gives a nice, refreshing fragrance to your rooms but also keeps cats away from these places.

Household cleaner and Freshener:The natural oils found in orange peels comprise limonene, a carbon based compound that is commonly used in commercial household cleaners. Limonene is an effective cleaning compound that cuts through grease and makes your metallic areas, like the sink, shine. You can also make an effective and natural room freshener by adding some cinnamon sticks, cloves and orange peels in hot, boiling water and heating the mixture for some time. Once boiled, turn the heat off and let it cool before straining and storing it in a bottle. The fruity, refreshing smell spreads an air of freshness all around.

Fire Kindling:Orange peels contain highly flammable oils and this is precisely why dried orange peels are an ideal fire kindling agent. The orange peels not only give a slow and steady burn, they also emit a pleasant scent while being burnt.

Keeping Brown Sugar Soft:Simply keep a piece of orange peel in the container in which you store brown sugar. Strange, but true, your brown sugar will stay much softer.

For Skin Glow:Orange peels can also be used as fragrant bathing powders. Simply dry some orange peels and make a powder out of them. You can use this powder daily for bathing. Similarly, you can use dried orange peels as homemade bath oils. Orange peels are rich in anti-oxidants, which in turn, make your skin pimple-free and acne-free and at the same time, add a special glow to it.

Thus, there are different ways of using orange peels at home. So the next time, you pick up some oranges, do not throw the peels away. Instead, just store them and use them in these ways and find out for yourself, how useful the discarded orange peels could be.

Extracting orange oil

Orange oil is being used in many cleaning products these days for its pleasant aroma and powerful solvent properties. As an essential oil, it has many health-related benefits. If you'd like to have a go at making your own orange oil extract, try this:

Note: because this process uses solvents, wear gloves, keep out of reach of children and naked flame and the same applies for the finished product. Orange oil is flammable and very corrosive.

For most cleaning purposes, a quarter of an ounce (7 mls) mixed in with a quart (1 liter) of water should be sufficient. Always spot test a brew before applying in quantity.

place into a mason (glass) jar and cover with grain alcohol (even vodka)

shake vigorously for a few minutes. If possible repeat this over a couple of days. Warmed alcohol

will help yield more oil

strain mixture through a coffee filter

place mixture in a shallow dish, cover with a material that will breathe and allow alcohol to evaporate

what's left over will be orange oil.
